Softball Defeats Towson For First-Time Ever, 3-1

Lady Bears Extend Winning Streak To Season-Long Seven Straight

TOWSON, Md. (April 11, 2018)-The Morgan State Lady Bears softball team entered its non-conference doubleheader against rival Towson on a six-game winning streak, but more importantly, had never defeated the host Tigers in their previous 17 meetings.

Towson entered the contest also riding a six-game winning streak and was 14-1 at home this season. The Tigers, who were ranked in several national categories, including fourth in batting average (.335), sixth in scoring (6.79) and 10th in slugging percentage (.519), were not only a perfect 17-0 all-time against the Lady Bears, but also carried a 21-game winning streak against members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).

Morgan State sophomore pitcher Stephanie Rundlett (8-6), who earlier in the week was named MEAC Co-Pitcher of the Week, threw a game-high seven strikeouts and the Lady Bears took advantage of two Towson errors to defeat the host Tigers, 3-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Tiger Softball Stadium.

Morgan State (17-13) got a run in the second inning when Evvie Buehlman scored on an error by the Towson second baseman, giving the guests a 1-0 lead. It would mark the first run scored by Morgan State against Towson since 2016.

The Lady Bears increased their advantage to 3-0 with two more runs in the fourth inning, when Stormy Zyzyk singled to center field to score Anissa Morales and Browdy scored on the play on a throwing error by the catcher.

Towson (29-10) got on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning when Nicole Stockinger scored the Tigers' lone run of the game. However, Towson would make things interesting when Kendall Arcia singled to center and Kendyl Scott followed with a walk to load the bases.

But Rundlett would get Towson's Riley Thies to pop up to second base to end the game.

Towson's Megan Dejter was charged with the loss and fell to 14-4 on the season. Dejter struck out five batters, while surrendering three runs on four hits.

Game 2 Update: Morgan State would complete the doubleheader sweep with an 11-5 victory over Towson in eight innings. Check back for further updates.
