BALTIMORE, Md. (March 15, 2018)-The Morgan State softball team returned to action on Thursday afternoon with a non-conference game against Mount St. Mary's, which was originally scheduled as a doubleheader on Wednesday. The Lady Bears would defeat The Mount, 3-0 to even up the all-time series, 15-15.
Morgan State (8-10) provided all its offense in the second inning and behind the pitching of starter Amy Begg and Stephanie Rundlett in relief, the Lady Bears would shutout the Mountaineers, who fell to 7-13.
The Lady Bears scored their first run of the game when Browdy scored on a passed ball. Damali Young then hit a single down the leftfield line to drive in Jalian Young and Caitlyn Williams to give the Lady Bears a 3-0 lead, which proved to be plenty.
Damali Young finished the game going 1-for-2 at the plate with a game-high 2RBI. In the bottom of the first inning Damali Young led off the inning with a walk and then stole second base, giving her 78 stolen bases for her career and moving her into a tie for first all-time at Morgan State.
Begg improved to 6-5 on the season with the win. She pitched four scoreless innings, allowing three hits and a walk, while striking out two. Rundlett relieved Begg in the fifth inning and recorded two strikeouts in three innings pitch to record her first save of the season.
Jordan Weaver was charged with the loss and fell to 3-6 on the season. Weaver allowed three runs on three hits and totaled five strikeouts in four innings of work. Shelbee Holcomb led the Mountaineers with two hits in three at bats.
The Lady Bears will now travel to Virginia's Tidewater area to open up Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play against the defending MEAC Northern Division champion, Hampton Lady Pirates. Morgan State and Hampton will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 17 at 1 p.m. and will close out the series on Sunday with a single game at noon. All three games will be played at Lady Pirates Stadium in Hampton, Va.
