Box Score TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Feb. 12, 2018)-The Morgan State women's basketball team picked up back-to-back road wins for the first time this season, as they defeated Florida A&M (FAMU) by a score of 59-44 on Monday evening in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest at the Al Lawson Center.
Morgan State (14-11, 7-5 MEAC), winners of two straight and four of its last five games, improved to 5-8 on the road this season. The victory also marked the 13th time that Morgan State has held an opponent under 60 points this season, upping its record to 12-1 when accomplishing that feat.
Jihayah Chavis led the Lady Bears with a game-high and career-tying 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting and recorded a game-high four steals in the win. Braennan Farrar also added a game-high 15 points, while Lexus Spears recorded her second double-double of the season, finishing with a game-high 12 rebounds to go with 12 points.
Monday's contest also marked the second consecutive game that Morgan State's defensive pressure held the host team to under 10 points in the opening period and also limited its opponent to just one field goal and three points in a quarter during the second half.
On Saturday at Savannah State the Lady Bears held the Lady Tigers to eight points in the first period and then held them scoreless the first six minutes of the fourth quarter, while allowing just one field goal and three points in the quarter.
Florida A&M (5-20, 3-9 MEAC) would score nine points in the first quarter and then had to deal with Morgan State's defensive intensity in the third quarter. The Lady Bears would hold FAMU scoreless for the first seven minutes of the quarter and surrendered just one field goal and a free throw, while outscoring the host Lady Rattlers, 20-3.
Morgan State held a 13-9 lead after a quarter of play and took a 19-13 advantage with 5:43 left in the second quarter on a basket by Spears. Florida A&M would close out the first half on an 8-0 run to take a 21-19 lead into the locker room.
The Lady Bears began the third quarter using a 13-0 run, capped off by a three-pointer from Chavis to take a 32-21 lead. FAMU would end a seven minute scoring drought to start the quarter when Dy'Manee Royal scored on a tip-in with 2:59 left in the period. Royal would later connect on the second of two free throws at the 2:22 mark to make it a 35-24 game and give the Lady Rattlers their third and final point of the quarter.
Morgan State took its largest lead of the game at 19 points, (57-38) when Tykyrah Williams nailed a three-pointer with 1:53 to play to cap off a 16-7 spurt.
The Lady Rattlers were led by Florence Ouattara's 14 points, while Ecenur Yurdakul finished with 13 points. Royal pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
Morgan State will host league leader Bethune-Cookman on Monday, Feb. 19 at 5:30 p.m. at Hill Field House. The Lady Wildcats (19-4, 11-0 MEAC) were a 57-47 winner on Monday over North Carolina Central. Bethune-Cookman will first visit Coppin State on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 2 p.m., before facing Morgan State.
