Lady Bears Hold Off UMES In MEAC Opening Round, 56-49

Box Score NORFOLK, Va. (March 11, 2013)-The Morgan State women's basketball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament on Monday with a 56-49 opening round win over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore at the Norfolk Scope Arena.
 
The Lady Bears, who enter the tournament ast the No. 6 seed, will face No. 3 seed Howard in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 12 p.m.
 
Morgan State (13-17), which is now on a five-game winning streak only led by five at the half, but used a 16-5 run to take a 42-28 lead with 5:07 to play. That was the largest lead of the game for the Lady Bears, who withstood a late rally from the Lady Hawks in the final minute of the game to hold on for the win.
 
Bianca Jarrett, who was named the All-MEAC second team, led the Lady Bears with a game-high 26 points, hitting 13 of her 15 free throws while going 5-for-19 from the floor. Tracey Carrington added 17 points for Morgan State and Moneisha Davis grabbed 10 rebounds.
 
The Lady Bears shot 27.8 percent (15-for-54) from the floor and hit five of their 24 3-pointers.
 
UMES (8-20), the No. 11 seed, shot 29.3 percent (17-for-58) from the floor and went just 4-for-17 (23.5 percent) from behind the arc.
 
Shawnee Sweeney led UMES with 15 points.
