Morgan Drops Opener of Battle At The Bay To St. John’s, 3-0

BALTIMORE, Md. (Aug. 24, 2012)-Ashley Boursiquot finished with a match-high eight kills and a hitting percentage of .800, while Aleksandra Wachowicz added six kills to lead the visiting Red Storm to a 3-0 (25-9, 25-7, 25-22) over host Morgan State in the Battle at the Bay tournament on Friday afternoon at Hill Field House. The match was the first-ever meeting between the two programs and the season opener for both teams.

Boursiquot also added a match-high five blocks, including two solos to help St. John's to a 7-6 advantage over Morgan State in blocks. Sabina Piegza recorded a match-high 25 assists for the Red Storm and Shawna-Lei Santiago tallied 11 of the team's 27 digs.

Morgan State (0-1), playing in its first season opener at home in eight years, would commit 26 attack errors, as well as eight service errors in the match. The Lady Bears were led by Arianna Hayden, who finished with six kills, two digs and a service ace. Nangeeshie Plaud had a team-high four digs, three kills and a solo block. Ngebui (Natalie) Chafeh and Jourdan Lemons split the duties at setter, totaling seven and six assists, respectively.

St. John's (1-0) limited Morgan State to a -.117 hitting percentage (17 kills on 77 attempts) for the match, including just three kills on 29 attempts for a -.276 percentage in set two.

The Lady Bears return to action on Saturday, Aug. 25th when they take on UMBC at 10 a.m. Morgan State will then close out the tournament with an 8 p.m. match against Towson.
