Morgan State Looks to End Three-Game Slide; Hosts UMES on Saturday

BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 9, 2012)-The Lady Bears, who are currently on a three-game losing skid, play host to in-state rival the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game this Saturday afternoon at Hill Field House. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. Morgan State, which is in the midst of a four-game homestand is 0-2 thus far.

BEAR CLAWS: Morgan State (6-17, 3-7 MEAC) is coming off a 55-64 loss to rival Howard on Monday. Omara Parker came off the bench to score 21 points, while Amarah Williams added 12 points on 6-for-6 shooting and a team-high seven rebounds. The Lady Bears have been paced by its seniors DeKeisha Mathis (12.8 points) and Parker (12.6 points, 5.4 rebounds). Mathis has knocked down a season-best 62 three-pointers. Williams has a team-leading 6.1 rebounds to go with her 7.7 points per outing. Morgan State, which is 2-4 at home this season, has not suffered a home loss to UMES since a 68-58 defeat on Dec. 30, 2008.

TALON GRIPS: Maryland Eastern Shore (8-13, 5-4 MEAC) is coming off a 62-58 overtime victory at home over Norfolk State on Monday. The Lady Hawks used a 17-2 run over the final 10 minutes to overcome a 15-point second half deficit and force overtime. Chelsea Sanders scored a game-high 25 points, while Adobi Agbasi nearly notched a triple-double, finishing with 22 points, a game-high 11 rebounds and a career-high eight blocked shots. UMES has been led by Sanders, who is averaging 13.7 points and 5.8 rebounds. Amber Cook is adding 8.0 points and Agbasi is chipping in with 7.5 points and has a team-leading 68 blocks. Shanyce Stewart is the Hawks' leading rebounder with 6.6 boards per game.

MORGAN VS. UMES SERIES NOTES: Morgan State has won two straight, but the Lady Hawks lead the all-time series over Morgan State, 36-30. The two teams split last season's series each winning on their home floor. Morgan State then defeated UMES, 43-39 in the quarterfinals of the MEAC Tournament (3/9/11).

NEXT UP: The Lady Bears return to action on Monday, Feb. 13 when they host Delaware State in a MEAC contest at 5:30 p.m. at Hill Field House. The game will be the final home contest of the season and will mark Senior Night for Lady Bears' DeKeisha Mathis and Omara Parker.

MORGAN VS. DELAWARE STATE SERIES NOTES: Delaware State leads the all-time series, 37-28. The two teams split last season's series each winning on the other's home floor.

MATHIS SECOND IN 3-POINTERS MADE; MSU FIRST: Senior DeKeisha Mathis by far is having her best season at Morgan State. The St. Louis, Mo., native has connected on 82 three-pointers for her career heading into Saturday's game against Maryland Eastern Shore with 62 of them coming this season. Mathis knocked down three treys against Howard (2/6) and ranks second in the MEAC behind Hampton's Choicetta McMillian, who has 63. As a team the Lady Bears lead the MEAC in three-pointers made with 152, while the Lady Pirates of Hampton have made 151 from beyond the arc.

DAVIS REACHES 100 STEALS: Junior Moneshia Davis recorded two steals at Hampton (1/30), giving her 101 for her career. Davis, who last season tallied a career-high 10 steals in a win over Northwestern State, added two more steals in Monday's loss to Howard (2/6), giving her 106 and is now 14 steals away from tying former Lady Bear Tracy Lewis (120 steals from 1989-93) for 10th all-time at Morgan State.

BEASLEY ONE SHY OF 100 WINS: Seventh-year Morgan State head coach Donald Beasley is one win shy of reaching the 100-wins plateau, after Morgan State defeated Norfolk State, 75-68 on Jan. 28, 2012. Last season he moved into second-place on the school's all-time career coaching victories list, after guiding the Lady Bears to a 51-44 victory over Delaware State. The victory was his 86th win, surpassing Anderson Powell (85-179 from 1986-94). Beasley, who has a career mark of 99-106, recorded his 80th career win, following a 53-48 victory over Northwestern State (11/27). LaRue Fields (122-60 from 1979-85) is the school's all-time leader.
