Erin Hawkins scored 14 points, including four three-pointers and had a team-high four steals in Morgan's win over Norfolk State.
Norfolk State 62, Morgan State 80
BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 27, 2010)-Corin Adams scored a game-high 21 points to lead four Lady Bears in double figures, as Morgan State defeated visiting Norfolk State, 80-62 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game at Hill Field House on Saturday afternoon. Adams also tied Norfolk State's Recca Trice with a game-high eight assists.
Erin Hawkins led Morgan's bench attack, scoring 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting, while Brittany Dodson, 3-for-4 from three-point range and Kristina Rosario both added 10 points in a reserve role, to lead the Lady Bears to their seventh straight win over Norfolk State. The win also helped the Lady Bears sweep the season series with the Spartans and improved the team to 7-1 this season at home.
The Lady Bears (15-12, 10-4 MEAC) shot 50 percent (29-of-58) for the game for the third time this season, while knocking down a season-best 11 three pointers.
Norfolk State (4-20, 0-14 MEAC) was led by Tyisha Bridges, Raychele Payne and Whitney Long, who all scored a team-high 12 points for the Spartans, who have dropped nine of their last 10 games, including their fourth straight road loss. Marian Brooks added 10 points.
The Spartans, whose only lead was the first basket of the game, drew within 10-9, following a mini 5-0 run. However, the host Lady Bears countered with 10 straight points in part of a 16-2 run to take a 26-12 advantage with 8:19 to play in the opening half. Morgan State would hold a 36-27 lead at the break.
Trailing 36-27 at the break, Norfolk State began the second half rejuvenated, using a 12-2 spurt to even the score at 39 all with 16:44 to play. Bridges scored the Spartans' first eight points of the second half and Payne capped off the run with a layup to tie the score.
That would be as close as the guests would get, as Dodson hit a three-pointer which triggered a 27-10 run by the home team, giving the Lady Bears a 66-49 lead with 7:26 left.
Norfolk State finished the game shooting 37 percent (22-of-59), including 3-of-14 (21 percent) from three-point range. Genor Dalton pulled down a game-high eight rebounds, while Brooks and Batavia Owens both added seven to help the Spartans to a 40-32 rebounding advantage over Morgan State.
Morgan State returns to action on Monday, March 1, with a MEAC contest against defending league champion, North Carolina A&T. Tip-off is slated for 6:30 p.m. The Lady Aggies (13-1) wrapped up their third consecutive regular season title on Saturday, by defeating Coppin State, 72-53. Norfolk State visits Coppin State on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
