BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 15, 2010) - Corin Adams scored a game-high 22 points to lead four Lady Bears in double figures scoring and help Morgan State to an 86-64 victory over South Carolina State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game on Monday evening at Hill Field House.
Georgien Williams (7-of-9) and Theresa Davis (5-of-7) both added 15 points, while Brittany Dodson came off the bench and chipped in with 10 points for Morgan State, which improved to 6-1 at home and finished its four-game homestand with a 3-1 mark. The win also completed a season sweep over South Carolina State and was Morgan's seventh straight win over the Lady Bulldogs.
South Carolina State (8-16, 3-9 MEAC) was led by Whitney Wiley, who tallied 19 points, while Sophilia Hipps added 16 points, including a game-high four three-pointers. Paris Alston came off the bench and finished with 11 points and Joi Walker led the team in rebounds with seven.
Two days after shooting a season-best 51 percent, the Lady Bears set a new season-high, shooting 60 percent (30-of-50) from the field. The hosts also connected on 22-of-23 (95.7 percent) from the charity stripe.
Morgan State (13-11, 8-3 MEAC) scored the game's first four points and took a 19-9 lead, following two free throws by Adams, less than 10 minutes into the contest. A three-point play by Wiley, brought SC State within 25-17 with 6:39 to play, but that would be as close as the guests would get the remainder of the game.
The Lady Bears countered with a 16-5 run to extend their lead to 41-22. DeKeisha Mathis (eight points), knocked down her second three-pointer of the half to give Morgan State its largest lead of the half (20 points) at 44-24 and then scored on a jumper as time expired to give the Lady Bears a 46-26 advantage at the break.
Morgan State, which never trailed in the contest, took its largest lead of the game on a three-pointer by Brittany Noel (74-44) with 8:33 to play.
South Carolina State would go on a 16-4 run over the next six minutes to cut the deficit to 78-60 with 2:53 left in the game, but would get no closer.
The Lady Bulldogs finished the game shooting 38.6 percent (22-of-57) and shot 61.5 percent (16-of-26) from the free throw line. Hipps led SC State with three steals, while Wiley and Tiara Knotts each recorded two.
Kristina Rosario pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds to help Morgan State hold a 32-28 advantage on the boards. Adams finished with a game-high six of Morgan State's 17 steals, while Mahala Thomas and Dodson each totaled three steals.
Morgan State returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 20, when it travels to Dover, Del. to take on Delaware State at 2 p.m. at Memorial Hall. The Hornets dropped a 52-42 decision at home on Monday to Florida A&M. South Carolina State will play the third of its four-game road swing, when it visits top-seeded North Carolina A&T on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Corbett Sports Center in Greensboro, N.C. The Aggies suffered their first MEAC loss of the season on Monday, as they fell at Hampton, 90-80.
