Megan Johnson recorded four strikeouts in the Game 2 loss at UMBC, giving her 99 for her career.
BALTIMORE, Md. (April 2, 2009)-The Morgan State softball team's three-game winning streak came to an end, as it was swept by crosstown rival the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) by scores of 2-0 and 6-1 in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at UMBC Softball Stadium.
Morgan State, which was held to just one hit each in the two games, fell to 9-5 on the season, while the Retrievers improved to 22-11 on the year.
UMBC pitchers Amanda Fefel, who earned the victory in the first game, recorded her 200th career strikeout, while Stephanie Weigman tallied her 300th strikeout of her career in the nightcap.
Morgan State's Jaclyn Hall led off Game 1 with a single, but it would be the Lady Bears lone hit of the game. Hall would also walk in the sixth inning to account for Morgan State's only two base runners in the game.
The hosts scored a run in the opening inning of Game 1 on an RBI single by Julia Culotta and Fefel helped herself, by hitting a solo homer in the bottom of the third to give UMBC a 2-0 lead.
Fefel, who improved to 8-2 with the win, also earned her fifth career shutout and the second this season. Fefel struck out 10 batters, one shy of her career high. Fefel also finished 2-for-3 at the plate and scored both of UMBC's runs.
The loss was charged to Porsche Boddicker (1-2), who went the distance and allowed two runs on five hits.
UMBC again struck early in Game 2, scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning, when Lauren Brummell, who led the inning with a triple, later scored on an RBI single through the right side by Lauren O'Malley.
O'Malley later made her presence felt in the third inning, when she provided a grand slam over the right field fence to extend the UMBC lead to 5-0.
The Lady Bears appeared to finally make some noise in the fifth inning, when Carolynn Howard reached on an error to start the inning. Jasmine Akers then ended the no-hitter with a single to left center. Angela Nunez followed with a walk to load the bases with one out. Hall followed with an RBI groundout to short to score Howard and give the Lady Bears their first run of the afternoon. But that would be all Morgan State would get.
The Retrievers would get the run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Fefel to score Brummell for the game's final score.
Weigman (13-8) would strikeout eight batters and walked two in the victory.
Morgan State's Megan Johnson (4-1) suffered her first loss of the season after giving up five runs on four hits and a walk in four innings of work.
The Lady Bears return to conference play, when they travel to Hampton, Va. to take on the Lady Pirates of Hampton in a MEAC doubleheader on Saturday, April, 4 at 1 p.m.
