Legacy Results

BALTIMORE, Md. (April, 21, 2009)-In what has been a rainy month of April, the showers held off long enough for two days over the weekend, in order to make the 6th Annual Morgan State Legacy Meet, held at Hughes Stadium a huge success.

In the end, the 2009 Legacy Meet, which honored past Morgan State team’s from 1947-50, produced 23 NCAA Regional qualifiers and a combined 19 individuals (12 on the men’s side) set or broke the previous meet record in their events.

Illinois captured the Legacy Meet title with 177.50 points, while last year’s champion, Pittsburgh, finished second with 98.50 points. Fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foes, Delaware State came in third with 63 points, while Maryland Eastern Shore placed fourth. The host Bears finished fifth with 57.50 points.

Morgan State finished the meet with 13 athletes who finished in the top 10, seven of which were top five finishers, including one gold medalist and three silver medalists.

Justus David captured Morgan’s lone title, by winning the 5000 meter run in a time of 14:52.07, thus becoming Morgan State's first-ever Legacy Meet 5000 meter champion. Silver medals were captured by Nathan Mesta, who came in second in the 3000 meter steeplechase (9:47.08), James Blocker in the high jump with a jump of 6-08.75, and Tyron Benjamin, who finished second in the shot put with a toss of 54-04.75. Benjamin also finished fourth in the javelin (169-04) and Anthony Napoleon placed fifth in the shot put (48-10.75).

Kevon Bowen placed third in the 200 meter dash in a time of 21.55, while Andrew Simpson, who finished sixth in the 110 meter hurdles (14.27), qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships.

The Bear’s 4X100 meter relay team of Stephen McLean, Bowen, Allen Blanks and Derrick Barner, placed sixth in a time of 42.23, while the 4X400 meter relay team comprised of Bowen, Jordan Higgs, McLean and Carbinere Whyte# finished ninth in a time of 3:18.14.
