BALTIMORE, Md. (Marc h 5, 2009)-Playing in her final home game at the Coppin Center, Whitney Cunningham scored a game-high 18 points and added a game-high 11 rebounds, while fellow senior Danielle Anders added 12 points to lead host Coppin State to a 61-53 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over rival Morgan State on Thursday evening at the Coppin Center.
Morgan State (17-12, 9-7 MEAC) which was looking for its first season sweep over Coppin State since the 1999-2000 season, was led by Corin Adams' team-high 15 points and game-high four steals, while Erin Hawkins added 12 points and Aaries Reed came off the bench to score 10 points in the loss.
Coppin State (14-13, 12-4 MEAC), who now leads the all-time series, 32-23 and has won 16 of the past 19 meetings against Morgan State, secured the No. 2 seed in the upcoming MEAC Tournament, while Morgan State will be the fifth-seed.
Morgan State, who trailed the entire first half, trailed by as much as 10 points (23-13), following a layup by Lakeytah Irving with 7:09 remaining in the opening half. The Lady Bears then countered with a 14-4 run, including a 9-1 spurt in the final two minutes of the half to tie the score at 27 all at the break.
The Lady Bears took their first and only lead of the game on a jumper by Adams with 17:10 remaining, to put the hosts up briefly, 30-29. Coppin State responded with a 9-0 run in less than three minutes and pushed the lead up to seven points after a jumper by Shante Cummings.
Stacy Hunt ended Morgan's scoring drought with a three-pointer in the right corner and Brittany Dodson later connected on a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 39-38 at the 9:54 mark. The Lady Bears would pull within a point three more times, the last coming at 50-49 on a layup by Theresa Davis with 4:53 left in the game. Coppin State, however would go on a 9-2 run to surge ahead, 59-51 with 1:34 left and put the game away.
Morgan State shot 26.9 percent (18-of-67) from the field, including 6-of-23 (26 percent) from three-point range. The Lady Bears finished the game shooting 92 percent (11-of-12) from the charity stripe. The host Lady Eagles finished the game shooting 24-of-59 (40.7 percent) from the floor, including 1-of-2 from three-point range.
The Lady Bears will now be the fifth-seed in next week's MEAC Tournament and will face No. 4 Maryland Eastern Shore on Thursday, March 12, in the quarterfinals at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, N.C.
