BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 14, 2009) -
Kristina Rosario scored a career- and team-high 16 points and
Corin Adams added 15, to lead host Morgan State to a 63-53 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over Florida A&M on Saturday afternoon at Hill Field House.
Rosario also added a career- and team-high nine rebounds for the Lady Bears, who recorded their fourth consecutive win over the Lady Rattlers. Morgan State also improved to 9-3 at home this season and tallied the program's 350th all-time victory, 271 of which have come on the Division I level since the 1981-82 season.
Florida A&M (10-12, 5-6 MEAC) was led by Deidra Jones, who tallied a double-double with a game-high 20 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Stephanie Foster added 12 points and Antonia Bennett finished with nine points and 10 rebounds.
The Lady Bears (15-9, 7-4 MEAC) erased a five point first half deficit, by going on a 10-2 run to take a 25-21 advantage and would hold a 29-27 lead at the break.
FAMU opened up the second period with a 7-2 spurt to take a 34-31 lead, following a three-pointer by three-point play by Jones. The Lady Rattlers held a 41-38 lead after a three-pointer by Jarquella Woods with 11:32 left in the contest, but Morgan State countered with a six straight free throws, before Adams' jumper with 9:05 remaining gave the Lady Bears a 46-41 lead and ended a six minute drought without a field goal.
Jones kept the guests close by going on a stretch where she scored seven of the Lady Rattlers' nine points, the last coming on a layup with 3:55 left to make it a 55-53 game. But that would be as close as Florida A&M would get, as Morgan State would score the game's final eight points, starting with a three-pointer by Adams from the right elbow to put the hosts up by five. The Lady Bears would then finish the game by hitting 5-of-8 free throws for the victory.
FAMU shot 27 percent (17-of-63) from the floor, while Morgan State finished 20-of-62 for 32.3 percent. The Rattlers outrebounded the Lady Bears, 56-39. The Lady Bears connected on 20-of-26 free throws (76.9 percent), while the guests hit 15-of-24 for 62.5 percent.
Adams notched five of Morgan's game-high eight steals, while Bennett and Foster each had two steals to account for the Lady Rattlers' four steals.
Morgan State concludes its brief mini two-game homestand on Monday, Feb. 16, when they host Bethune-Cookman in a MEAC game at 5:30 p.m. at Hill Field House. The Lady Wildcats are coming off a 69-61 loss on Saturday at Coppin State. Bethune-Cookman won the first meeting this season over Morgan State, 83-78 in Daytona Beach (1/19).
