Lady Bears Defeat Rival Coppin State In Season Finale, 57-49

BALTIMORE, Md. (March 2, 2023)--Playing in their last home game of their Morgan State careers, Charlene Shepherd recorded a double-double with a team-high 20 points and had 12 rebounds, while Sunshine McCrae and Ja'Niah Henson added 11 and 10 points, respectively, to lead Morgan State past crosstown rival Coppin State, 57-49 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) regular season finale at Hill Field House.

Taylor Addison added nine rebounds and four points, while Vanessa Oduah added four points and tied a game high with two steals, in their last home game.

With the win, Morgan State (17-10, 10-4 MEAC) ended a four-game losing skid and finished the regular season tied with Howard for second place in the league standings. The Lady Bears victory helped them wrap up the No. 2 seed over Howard in next week's MEAC Tournament due to tie break scenarios.

The Lady Bears also set the program record for most home wins in a season, as they recorded their 11th home victory out of the 13 contests at Hill Field House this season. Morgan State head coach Ed Davis also secured his 99th coaching victory at Morgan State.

Coppin State (8-21, 5-9 MEAC) was led by Jewel Watkins, who finished with 15 points on 6-of-18 shooting. Mossi Staples tallied 11 points and Nadjy Amira came off the bench to score 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Colleen Bucknor recorded a game-high 11 boards for the Eagles.

Morgan State, which led 31-25 at the break, turned 12 Coppin State turnovers into 32 points and totaled 44 points in the paint.

The Lady Bears will face No. 7 Maryland Eastern Shore next Wednesday, March 8 in the quarterfinal round of the MEAC Tournament. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. at the Norfolk Scope Arena in Norfolk, Va. The Lady Bears and UMES split this season's regular season series, each winning on their home floor.
