Men's Track & Field Wrap Competition at Penn Relays Carnival

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (April 28, 2018) -- The Morgan State men's track and field team wrapped action at the 124th Penn Relays on Saturday at Franklin Field.
 
The Bears relay teams had solid efforts during Saturday's conclusion at one of the nation's premier facilities. Morgan State finished fifth in the 4x400m Relays. The Bears quartet of senior Fernandes Boyd, freshman Keon Rantin, senior Stephen Varella and freshman Ilkeem Ellis posted a season-best mark of 3:11.15-- .60 faster than the 3:11.75 they posted at the Duke Invitational on April 21. Maryland (3:10.41) was beat out at the finish line by Hampton who won the event with a 3:09.90.
 
Morgan State's foursome consisting of seniors Lloyd Hylton, Desean White and Shindell Henry and freshman Keon Rantin also turned in a time of 41.52 to finish sixth in the 4x100m Eastern. 

On Friday, the Bears recorded a 12th place finish in Friday's 4x400 Relay Heats. Boyd ran the opening leg followed by Rantin and Varella (49.00) before Ellis (48.04) finished the anchor leg. The quartet clocked in with a 3:13.01. Auburn outraced Rutgers to the finish line for the title with a 3:07.72.

In the field events, Hylton recorded a leap of 7:21m (23-8) to place ninth in the College Long Jump Championship, while freshman Kobe-Jordan Rhooms recorded a leap of 7.04m (23-1.25) to place ninth in the College Long Jump.  Rhooms also finished T-31stin the high jump with a mark of 1.96m (6-5).

Varella posted a time of 55.37 in the 400-meter Hurdles Championship. His time was just .34 seconds off his season-best mark of 53.98 that he ran at the UNCW Seahawk Invitational (March 10) earlier this season. Hampton's Jaelen Williams captured first place by crossing the tape with a time of 51.23.

Next up, the Bears will be in action at the 2018 MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships which will take place May 3-5 in Greensboro, N.C. at the Irwin Belk Track.
