COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The Morgan State men's track and field teams received strong performances from its sprinters and throwers, including a gold medal from senior
Joel Roberson in the 400-meter dash, on the final day of the Weems Baskin Invitational, held Saturday on South Carolina's campus in Columbia, South Carolina.
Roberson sprinted to a first-place finish in the 400-meter dash, clocking a season-best time of 47.03 seconds. The Laurel (Md.) native now has the fastest mark in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and currently ranks No. 23 in the nation.
Morgan State began Saturday with the men's 4x100-meter relay, as the Bears quartet of Roberson,
Devon Hairston,
Desean White and
Deyvon Howell raced to a sixth-place finish in the event with a season-best time of 41.15 seconds. Howell also finished 11th in the 200-meter dash clocking in at 21.29
The Bears turned around and posted a second place finish in the 4x400-meter relay. The four-member crew consisting of
Kevin Leach, Howell, Roberson and
Vikarie Elliott crossed the finish line in a season-best time of 3:10.99, just behind St. Augustine's at 3:09.53. The Bears quartet of
Stephen Varella,
Nigel Thompson,
Wilfred Asamoah and
Braxton Hammock placed 15th with a time of 3:24.82.
Desean White, the reigning MEAC Track Athlete of the Week, recorded an 11
th place finish in the 100 meters with a time of 10.61.
Stephen Varella, 53.19 competed in the 400-meter hurdles, placing fourth overall, while
Devon Hairston added a mark of 54.97 to place 13th.
Wilfred Asamoah participated in the 110-meter hurdles, placing 22nd overall.
Up next, Morgan State will compete at the Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville, Florida from March 30 – April 1.
