HARMARVILLE, Pa. (Jan. 14, 2017)-The Lady Bears' tennis team suffered a 5-1 season-opening loss to host Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon in their first match of the Vartabedian Invite at the Alpha Tennis & Fitness Center.
Pittsburgh concluded the weekend with a perfect 2-0 mark in the invitational, while also upping its overall record to 2-0 in the series against Morgan State.
The Lady Bears (0-1) will conclude the tournament with a non-conference match on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. against Duquesne. Duquesne was swept by Pittsburgh on Friday afternoon.
Only two doubles matches were played, with the host Panthers earning both victories to claim the doubles point. Pittsburgh then earned victories in the first three singles matches, and at No. 5 singles.
The Lady Bears' lone win came from junior
Kayla Price, who defeated Pittsburgh's Jovana Knezevic in a No. 4 match 6-2, 7-6 (4-0). Freshman
Katia Jordan, playing in her first collegiate match, went three sets with the Panthers' Audrey Ann Blakely at the No. 2 spot, falling 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.
