Lady Bears Head to Norfolk to Battle The Spartans

NORFOLK, Va. (Jan. 27, 2012)-Morgan State, winners of a season-long two straight, heads back on the road this weekend when they visit Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foes Norfolk State on Saturday, Jan. 28th at 4 p.m. at Echols Hall, followed by an ESPNU contest against Hampton on Monday, Jan. 30th at the HU Convocation Center.

BEAR CLAWS: Morgan State (5-14, 2-4 MEAC), which concluded its four-game homestand on a positive note with back-to-back wins over North Carolina A&T and North Carolina Central on Monday, enters Saturday's Norfolk State contest coming off a 64-59 victory over North Carolina Central. Freshman Amarah Williams scored a career– and game-high 19 points and added 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Fellow Tracey Carrington and senior Omara Parker each added 13 points in the win. Morgan State has been paced by its seniors, DeKeisha Mathis (12.9 points) and Parker (11.6 points). Carrington is totaling 8.6 points and has a team-leading 6.0 rebounds per game.

SPARTAN LEGION: Norfolk State (8-10, 3-4 MEAC) enters Saturday's contest on a two-game losing skid, following a 92-43 thumping at Hampton on Monday. Rae Corbo led the way for the Spartans with a game-high 19 points. The Spartans are led by Long, who is averaging a team-leading 13.5 points, while Corbo is chipping in with 13.3 points. Rachel Gordon is third on the team in scoring with 8.4 points and leads the team in rebounding with 9.3 boards a game.

MORGAN VS. NORFOLK STATE SERIES NOTES: The Lady Bears trail Norfolk State in the all-time series, 15-11 after the Spartans defeated the Lady Bears, 76-75 earlier in the month in Baltimore (1/14). Norfolk State, which has won the last two meetings, defeated the Lady Bears last season in Norfolk, 66-65 (2/26/11).

WILLIAMS SETS CAREER-HIGH: Freshman Amarah Williams scored a career-high 19 points  on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor and went 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the win over North Carolina Central (1/23). Williams, who also had two steals and a block, added a game-high 10 rebounds to record her second consecutive double-double and third of the season.

MATHIS, MSU SECOND IN MADE 3-POINTERS: Senior DeKeisha Mathis by far is having her best season at Morgan State. The St. Louis, Mo., native has connected on 70 three-pointers for her career heading into Saturday's game at Norfolk State with 50 of them coming this season. Her 50 three-pointers ranks second in the MEAC behind Hampton's Choicetta McMillian, who has 54. As a team the Lady Bears also rank second behind Hampton in three-pointers made with 126, while the Lady Pirates have made 132 from beyond the arc.

DAVIS CLOSING IN ON 100: Junior Moneshia Davis tallied a season-best seven steals in the win over North Carolina Central (1/23), giving her 96 for her career. Davis, who last season tallied a career-high 10 steals in a win over Northwestern State, is now four shy of reaching 100 steals for her career. Davis is also 24 steals away from tying former Lady Bear Tracy Lewis (120 steals from 1989-93) for 10th all-time at Morgan State.

BEASLEY TWO SHY OF 100 WINS: Seventh-year Morgan State head coach Donald Beasley is two wins shy of reaching the 100-wins plateau, after defeating North Carolina Central, 64-59 on Jan. 23, 2012. Last season he moved into second-place on the school's all-time career coaching victories list, after guiding the Lady Bears to a 51-44 victory over Delaware State. The victory was his 86th win, surpassing Anderson Powell (85-179 from 1986-94). Beasley, who has a career mark of 98-103, recorded his 80th career win, following a 53-48 victory over Northwestern State (11/27). LaRue Fields (122-60 from 1979-85) is the school's all-time leader.
