Phil Steele's 2011 Preseason All-MEAC Team
CLEVELAND,Ohio – Morgan State University has six football student-athletes who were named to the Preseason All-MEAC Team in Phil Steele's FCS College Football Preview Magazine.
The group of six Bears is led by senior Lawrence Brewer by making the first team as an offensive lineman, while senior tight end Lamont Bryant, junior linebacker Allen Stephens, senior safety Reshaude Miller, junior defensive end Bakari Smith, and junior punter Nicholas Adams all made the second team.
Brewer, who was recently named preseason All-MEAC First Team, returns as one of the top offensive linemen in the FCS. The 6-foot-6, 300-pounder started in every game since joining the Bears and will once again man his left tackle position where he has become a premier run- and pass blocker for the Bears.
Bryant, a 2011 preseason All-MEAC selection, returns as the top tight ends in the conference. The 6-foot-6, 215-pound senior has caught 23 passes for 306 yards and two touchdowns the past two seasons. He will attempt to bounce back from a disappointing 2010 season in which he was limited to just five catches (55 yds) while playing through injury.
Stephens, who was second on the team with 65 tackles and 11.5 tackles for loss season, returns as one of the league's top defenders. Already being mentioned in the same breath as recent MSU standouts Albert Gamble, Vincent Brown and Jerrell Guyton, Stephens will definitely be one to watch this season.
Miller (6-4, 180) is the leading returning tackler to the Bears defense as he finished the 2010 season with 67 total tackles, including four interceptions. Miller (6-4, 180) is an absolute ball-hawk from his free safety position and will continue to be a vocal leader for the defense. The coaching staff feels he will once again be a player to watch when the Bears kickoff the season this fall. “He has just scratched the surface of what he can do.”
Smith (6-1, 240) is an intense, tough football player who has appeared in 25 games and played particularly well as a starter last year. He had a fantastic spring and is expected to play a major role in the trenches for the Bears.
Adams was named Second Team All-MEAC after completing the 2010 season ranked 2nd in the MEAC, averaging 39.6 yards per punt, including 17 placed inside the 20 yard-line. Adams possesses a potent combination of leg power and accuracy and is expected to be one of the top punters in the league and quite possibly the nation.
