Senior wideout Tyrone Hendrix
BALTIMORE, Md. – With the season a little under two months away, Andre Nelson, Tyrone Hendrix and Chris Flowers have been selected to the 2011 College Football Performance Awards FCS Kick Returner of the Year watch list.
Nelson finished the 2010 season by averaging 26.1 yards per kickoff return, including a season-best 56-yd kickoff return during a victory against Howard (9/25) during the Whitney Young Classic at New Meadowlands Stadium. The 5-foot-10, 185–pound senior moves from defensive back to wide receiver for his final season with the Bears.
Hendrix, also a senior, is coming off a junior season where he ranked No. 2 in the MEAC in kickoff returns (23.1 avg). The Florida product also posted a 93-yard TD return against Bethune-Cookman (10/2). As a wideout, Hendrix (6-1, 190) completed the season with 8 receptions for 138 yards, including a touchdown.
The third representative to the watch list is sophomore Chris Flowers. Flowers (5-10, 175) enters the fall as one of the fastest members of the team and should continue to give opponents headaches as a return specialist. As a redshirt-freshman in 2010, he averaged 21.8 yards per kickoff return, including 73-yard touchdown return vs. Delaware State during MSU's Homecoming victory. He was also the team's fourth leading receiver with 9 receptions for 94 yards (10.4 avg).
Among the other Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference representatives are Torrian Warren (N.C. A&T), Justin Ferrell (N.C. A&T) and Arthur Goforth, (N.C. Central).
The Bears will kickoff the 2011 season on September 3rd against the Towson Tigers.
