Lady Bears Take Second at Delaware State Invitational; Four Set Season Records

BALTIMORE, Md. (May 2, 2010)-The Morgan State women's track and field team capped off what has been a busy yet successful 48 hours, with a second-place finish at the Delaware State Invitational held on Saturday, May 1 in Dover, Del.

 

Morgan State finished with 105 points, while host Delaware State won the meet with 118.50 points. It was the second consecutive second-place finish for the Lady Bears in three days.

 

On Thursday, the Lady Bears also came in second-place behind Delaware State, as they competed at the Coppin State Eagle Twilight Meet.

 

On Saturday the women performed extraordinarily well, as Morgan State had 16 top 10 finishers, including four individuals who notched season and personal bests. The Lady Bears also won every sprint race except the 400 hurdles and the 4X100 relay, which they finished in second, respectively.

 

Britney Wattley took first in the 100 meter dash with an ECAC and season-best time of 12.05. Avionne Sloan placed third in a time of 12.34, while Christa Rogers finished seventh in a time of 12.65.

 

Rogers, who on Thursday set a personal best time after winning the 100 meter hurdles (14.48), set a new season and personal record with a time of 14.40, while claiming another victory in the 100 hurdles and just missed the ECAC qualifying standard.

 

Sloan won the 200, while setting a season best time of 24.68, followed by Wattley, who also ran a season best with a time of 24.72 and placed second. Both Sloan and Wattley finished with ECAC qualifying times.

 

Tanisha Kendrick would round out the Lady Bear winners who set season bests, recording an ECAC qualifying time of 55.93, while placing first in the 400 meter dash.

 

Kamice Smalls finished second in the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 1:04.88, while Lauren Campbell placed third in the event in a time of 1:07.23.

 

Smalls later joined Wattley, Sloan and Rogers in the 4X100 meter relay and helped Morgan State to a second-place finish with a time of 47.27.

 

In the field events, Allison Randall won the discus with a toss of 142-08, while Micsha Carson came in second in the javelin with a throw of 108-02.

 

Candace Shirley had a four-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 34-08.25, while Carson placed fifth with a throw of 34-07.75.

 

Other top 10 finishes, included Naomi Tucker, who placed ninth in the 800 meter run (2:34.73), followed by Jasmine Hilts (2:34.94), who finished 10th.

 

The Lady Bears will now get ready for the upcoming Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championships, which are set for Thursday, May 6-Saturday, May 8 in Greensboro, N.C. on the campus of North Carolina A&T.
