Morgan State in 7th at MEAC Championship; Three Lady Bears Qualify For Saturday’s Finals

GREENSBORO, N.C. (May 7, 2010)-The 2010 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track and Field championships completed its first full day of competition on Friday at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University (N.C. A&T). The Morgan State Lady Bears are currently in seventh-place with 10 points after Day 2 of the meet.

 

The Norfolk State women lead the way with 67 points after two days, while four-time defending MEAC champion Hampton is in second with 43 points. Host N.C. A&T is in third with 30 points.

 

Tanisha Kendrick had a great start to the MEAC championships, running the fastest time in the 400 meter dash during the preliminary round. Kendrick ran a time of 54.28 to advance to Saturday's finals. Fellow teammate Avionne Sloan also qualified for tomorrow's final, running a time of 54.64 to place fifth in the preliminaries.

 

Sloan would later miss out in reaching the finals of the 200 meter dash, placing ninth in the preliminaries in a time of 24.48. Britney Wattley finished 11th in a time of 24.59, while Kendrick finished in 24.95 seconds to place 13th.

 

Christa Rogers qualified for the finals in the 100 meter hurdles after her eighth-place finish in a time of 14.44 during the preliminaries. Kamice Smalls placed 10th in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.26.

 

In the field events, Micsha Carson came in fourth in the javelin with a throw of 113-04, while defending MEAC shot put champion, Allison Randall, finished fifth in the shot with a toss of 44-06.00.

 

Carson also placed eighth in the heptathlon with a total of 4,239 points. Carson captured the javelin portion of the heptathlon with a winning throw of 114-08, while also placing second in shot put with a toss of 10.64 meters. Carson would later place 19th overall in the open long jump 16-01.75.

 

The final day of competition begins tomorrow at 10 a.m., with the men's and women's triple jump, men's shot put, men's pole vault and women's discus. Early afternoon field events include the high jump and javelin events. Running events will begin at 1 p.m. The championships will conclude with the men's and women's 4X400 relay races.

 

Admission for the 2010 MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships is free.
