Morgan State Track Teams Spent Weekend Competing on Big Stage at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (April 25, 2010)-The Morgan State women's and men's outdoor track and field teams spent the weekend competing at the 116th annual Penn Relays at Franklin Field, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.

 

This year's Penn Relays drew a record crowd of 117,346 fans over three days, surpassing the previous mark of 114,194 set in 2006. Saturday's final day also set an attendance record of 54,310 fans, nearly 3,500 more than the previous mark set in 2002.

 

The Lady Bears' Allison Randall was the top finisher, placing 11th in the women's discus throw championship on Friday with a throw of 145-6.

 

On Thursday, April 22, the 4X400 relay team of Avionne Sloan, Tanisha Kendrick, Kamice Smalls and Britney Wattley came in 37th in a time of 3:50.17, while the 4X100 team of Wattley, Sloan, Smalls and Tendai Hill finished 52nd in a time of 47.86.

 

On the men's side, Trey Charles placed seventh in the 400 hurdles championship, finishing in a time of 52.11.

 

Charles then joined fellow teammates Jordan Higgs, Issac Richardson and Kevin Bowen in the 4X400 meter relay, an event which the Morgan State men's team has won five championships at the Penn Relays, which ties Syracuse, Manhattan and Chicago for fifth most titles in the event. This year's squad finished 21st overall in a time of 3:11.90. However, the team did qualify for the IC4A race, which it did place sixth in a time of 3:12.60.

 

Other Bears' relay teams to compete were the sprint medley team and the 4X100 relay team. The sprint medley team of Charles, Carbinere Whyte, Bowen and Richardson competed in the sprint medley championship of America and placed 30th in a time of 3:30.01, while the 4X100 squad of Whyte, Bowen, Charles and Higgs was clocked at a time of 42.53 to take 44th.

 

Both men's and women's squads will now prepare for this Saturday's Delaware State Invite in Dover, Del.
