Reggie Holmes averaged 20.3 ppg at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament.
BALTIMORE, Md. – Morgan State men's basketball player Reggie Holmes, the last player of 64 selected to attend the Portsmouth Invitational pro basketball exposure camp, was named Saturday as one of the 10 members of the All-Tournament Team.
Holmes was one of the big surprises of the camp, held over the weekend in Portsmouth, Va., for the top collegiate players in the nation to show their skills to be potentially drafted or signed by NBA teams. Holmes was the only player selected from a Historically Black College & University (HBCU) to be invited to attend the camp.
Holmes scored double-figures in each of his three games in the tournament. He scored a game-high 24 points with 6 rebounds on Thursday night; had 22 points with 7 rebounds on Friday; and had 15 points and 6 rebounds on Saturday.
“I'm very excited to have been the only black college player represented in the tournament,” said Reggie Holmes. “I'm even more excited to have been recognized as one of the top 13 players in the whole tournament.”
Holmes was the lone HBCU player named to the All-Tournament Team at the Portsmouth camp. Joining him was: *Jerome Randle (California), Rodney Green (LaSalle), Donald Sloan (Texas A&M), Raymar Morgan (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi), Osiris Eldridge (Illinois State), Mikhail Torrance (Alabama), Ryan Thompson (Rider), A.J. Slaughter (Western Kentucky), Jordan Eglseder (Northern Iowa) and DeShawn Sims (Michigan).
The Portsmouth camp is the first of three development camps for NBA prospects, leading up to the NBA Draft June 24 in Madison Square Garden, N.Y. The other camps will be held in Phoenix, Ariz., and Orlando, Fla.. Each camp is considered a "stepping stone" for players to progress toward the league's draft.
Holmes, a 6-4 guard, is trying to become the first Division I player at Morgan State to be drafted by an NBA team. Holmes would be the second Morgan State player ever drafted by an NBA team. Marvin “The Human Eraser” Webster, who played for the Bears from 1971-75, was a first round draft selection by the Denver Nuggets in 1975. As a 7-1 center, Webster helped the Nuggets win the 1976-77 NBA Midwest Division and the SuperSonics the 1977-78 NBA Western Conference title.
Holmes, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year, was recently named as an Associated Press All-American honorable mention, Holmes averaged 21.8 points and 4.3 rebounds during the regular season for MSU, which finished 27-10 after losing to West Virginia in the NCAA tournament's first round.
