GREENSBORO, N.C. (May 3, 2009)-The Morgan State men’s track and field team concluded the final day of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships with a fifth-place finish with 73 points on Saturday at North Carolina A&T.
Norfolk State won their fourth straight team title and sixth overall with 133.50 points, while Hampton recorded 104 points to finish as runner-ups. Maryland Eastern Shore (93.50) was third and North Carolina A&T (84) finished fourth.
The Bears finished the third and final day with two champions, a runner-up finisher and three NCAA regional qualifiers.
Tyron Benjamin claimed the shot put with a toss of 57-09.75, while Justus David captured the 1500 meter run in a personal-best time of 3:53.25. It was the second title for Justus, who also won the 5000 meter run the day before. Kevin Bowen placed second in the 400 meter dash in a time of 46.38, which was also a personal-best. All three athletes also were NCAA Regional qualifiers.
Benjamin joins David and Dakaria Taylor-Watson as first-team All-MEAC selections. Taylor-Watson won the decathlon on Friday, while David also captured gold in Friday's 5000 meter run to go along with his 1500 meter victory.
Bowen and James Blocker, who finished second in Friday's high jump, earned second-team All-MEAC honors.
