Rodriguez Named MEAC Rookie of the Week

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (April 20, 2009)—Morgan State freshman shortstop, Lydia Walther-Rodriguez was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week this afternoon, as announced by the league office. North Carolina A&T's Ryanne Hill was named MEAC Player of the Week, while Norfolk State's Alyssa Velazquez earned pitcher of the week accolades.

 

A native of Virginia Beach, Va., Rodriguez went 2-for-3 with a run scored and drove in a game-high four RBI in an 11-3 win over Coppin State, the Lady Bears' lone game of the week. Rodriguez hit for .666 and finished with one double and a triple in three plate appearances. She also added two putouts.

 

Sophomore pitcher Megan Johnson was cited in other top performers. The native of New Windsor, Md., pitched a complete game, allowing four hits and one walk in five innings of work to earn the win and improve to 7-1 on the season. Johnson also finished with five strikeouts to reach the 100-strikeout plateau, giving her 104 for her career.

       

The Lady Bears (12-6, 5-1 MEAC) are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, April 25, when they visit Howard for a MEAC doubleheader at 1 p.m. at Banneker Field in Washington, D.C.
