BALTIMORE, Md. – For the three seniors on the Morgan State men's basketball team, their final home game in Hill Field House couldn't have turned out any better.
Reggie Holmes scored 15 points, Jermaine Bolden added 12 to lead the 2008-09 MEAC regular season champs to a 64-50 Senior Night victory against Delaware State on Saturday night. Morgan State dropped the Hornets for the fifth-straight time and culminated play at Hill Field House with an 8-2 overall home record.
The Bears, who notched the MEAC regular season title for the second straight season, got solid play from their three senior starters, Jermaine Bolden, Marquise Kately and Rogers Barnes.
Bolden led the Bears with 8 points in the first half and finished the game five rebounds and five assists. Kately went 5-for-8 from the field and scored 10 points and pulled down five boards with two blocked shots.
Barnes chipped in 7 points (3-6 FG) with four rebounds and four assists.
Fred Bouie led Delaware State (7-23, 5-10) with 16 points on 3-for-4 shooting from beyond the arc. Donald Johnson and Greg Smith added 8 points apiece.
Morgan State held a 36-28 lead at halftime.
The Bears opened the second half with a 14-4 run through the first six minutes. The run extended the Bears lead to 18 points following a layup by Thompson with 14:24 left in the game. The Hornets cut Morgan's lead to 11 points following an 8-2 run which was capped off by a Bouie 3-pointer with 5:33 left in the game. However, the Hornets were unable to cut the lead to single digits as they fell 64-50, marking their fifth consecutive loss.
Morgan State (19-11, 12-3 MEAC) head coached Todd Bozeman talked about the contributions of his seniors following the game.
“I thanked our seniors for believing in our philosophy, being a part of the program, and building the foundation of our program.” said Bozeman. “Those guys are very important and they played a significant role in putting two banners in here [Hill Field House].”
“Hopefully we still have a lot of basketball to play.”
Morgan State held a 37-29 advantage on the glass and was led by redshirt freshman Kevin Thompson who posted a game-high eight rebounds to go along with 9 points.
Delaware State shot 38.5 percent from the floor and connected on 7-of-20 three-pointers, while the Bears shot a blistering 52 percent (25-48) for the night.
The Bears will wrap-up the regular season when they face cross-town rival Coppin State (12-17, 9-6) at the Coppin Center on Thursday, March 5th. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
